What is Bancontact?

Bancontact is an electronic payment solution operating in Belgium. This article outlines integration and branding advice for Bancontact so that you can ensure the best experience for your customer.

In-app integrations

Bancontact relies on deep-linking to launch the Bancontact app during the payment process. For this reason, we recommend you avoid loading the Bancontact payment page inside a WebView within your app.

WebViews typically do not support handling these URL schemes correctly, which can result in redirects failing silently and your customer getting stuck mid-payment. Instead, open the payment flow in the device’s default browser.

Payment options based on screen size

The Bancontact payment page adjusts to different screen sizes based on your customer's device.

  • Mobile (≤599px): vertical layout with a “Pay with Bancontact app” link and PAN input form.

  • Small devices (600–767px): horizontal layout with the app link and PAN input form.

  • Medium devices (768–1199px): horizontal layout with app link, QR code, and PAN input form.

  • Large/desktop (≥1200px): horizontal layout with QR code and PAN input form.

For payments over €1,500, all mobile app options are hidden.

Note

If you embed the Bancontact payment page on desktop (e.g., via an iframe or popup), you must ensure the container width is at least 1200px. The QR code is only rendered when the container width is ≥ 1200px.

If the width is below 1200px, the page shows an app deep link instead of the QR code, which can negatively impact conversion rates on desktop.

Customer experience

To improve your customer's experience with Bancontact, we suggest that you advise them that:

  • For certain banks, they may need extra hardware such as card readers. They should contact their bank to find out exactly what they need.

  • Language changes may happen when your customer moves between Bancontact payment pages and the payment pages of the bank.

  • They have 60 minutes to enter their details and click "Confirm" after they land on the card data entry page. After 60 minutes, the payment expires.

  • To pay with a mobile device, your customer must download the Bancontact Pay app (previously known as the Payconiq by Bancontact app), or a bank app that has embedded the Bancontact mobile technology, to their mobile device.

Brand and marketing guidelines

You must always display the most up-to-date Bancontact logo to your customer.

We support both Bancontact Card and Bancontact Pay payment flows. As selection of the flow type is made by your customer after redirection to the Bancontact page, you should use the Bancontact combined display method in your checkout/payment selection screens.

If you accompany the payment method names/logos with taglines, please use the Bancontact tagline as described in Bancontact's combined display guide.

The logo downloads can be found in Bancontact's documentation.
